About CIS

Hi, my name is Dana Brewer, and I founded CIS in 1988 on a fiber of a shoestring. No, really! I've fought through many obstacles in the 30+ years since then, and I keep doing it day after day because I care about us - our families, our neighborhoods, our state. Let's face it. The landscape has changed, and businesses small and large need help to compete, communities need strong companies to build a solid infrastructure, companies need to created jobs, the youth need education to work those jobs. I could go on, but you get the point. So, here's why I built this company:

 

I was working as a clerk in a Human Resources department for a Bay Area utility. The year was 1982, and the first IBM personal computers had rolled off the assembly lines and were starting to make their way onto desks in our building. Nobody knew what to do with them.

 

An HR analyst wowed me how easily Lotus 123 could sort a list of names and test scores. I knew that big, rectangular box had to do more than just that, so I set out to find out more. My focus was learning how to use this new technology to increase productivity and efficiency. From those humble beginnings came a lifetime love affair with problem-solving and growth through applied technology.

 

In a short time, I was able to automate a significant business process in my department while still working as an administrative clerk. On my time and dime, I grew my knowledge and skills and benefited the utility company while still very young. The only problem was, nobody would open any doors for me so I could grow. So, I took matters into my own hands.

 

I saved up my money, bought a computer, read a LOT of books, took some classes, and started building solutions and helping small businesses in the community on the evenings and weekends. I saw I had a knack for problem-solving through applied technology solutions and my customers wanted more of my help than I could give while working full-time. It wasn't hard to see my next move.

 

In 1988, I took a significant risk and asked my parents for a small business loan – with our family home as collateral. They said yes, so the pressure was on. Failure was not an option. That 'gentle' pressure combined with my personal 'go get 'em' attitude drove me to align with my clients' missions and goals, learn what makes them tick, and figure out how I could help them. I figured, if my clients succeed, my team and I succeed.

 

Since then, CIS has succeeded. We have been delighting our customers for over 30 years. We still stand on the same principles that have kept us strong, namely, Competence, Innovation, and Strategy.
